Radford University experts available: Former FBI Director James Comey's indictment
Radford, VA (04/30/2026) — Former FBI Director James Comey made his first courtroom appearance Wednesday, one day after being indicted by a federal grand jury on counts of making a threat against the president and transmitting a threat across state lines.
The allegations involve a social media post Comey briefly shared last year, an image of seaside shells arranged to form the numbers "86 47." It's a phrase some protesters have used to call for President Trump's removal from office, but in an indictment this week, prosecutors maintained that the image could be interpreted as a threat or "an intent to do harm" to the president.
Comey's next hearing in the matter will take place in a North Carolina courtroom later this year. This week's development comes after Comey was indicted last year by a Virginia grand jury on charges of lying to congress, but that case dismissed.
Comey and President Trump have long been at odds, and this new development raises debate about free speech, the nature of a threat, and the legal and political ramifications of the dispute and the charges. Radford University professor and chair of the Department of Political Science Chapman Rackaway is available to speak about these facets, and give his expert interpretation about the ongoing situation.
