Radford University expert available: Kristi Noem out at DHS, what happens next?
Radford, VA (03/06/2026) — President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is firing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and plans to replace her with Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, marking the first cabinet-level departure of the president's second term and setting up a high-profile confirmation and transition at the department overseeing immigration enforcement and border security.
Chapman Rackaway, professor and chair of Radford University's Department of Political Science, is available to discuss what this move signals about the administration's priorities and messaging, what it could mean for DHS leadership and policy direction, and how a Mullin nomination may play in the Senate.
Rackaway's expertise includes the U.S. presidency and executive branch, social media in politics, political polarization, U.S. Congress and political communication.
