MEDIA ADVISORY: IRS Citizen Academy Training Program returns to Radford University

by Neil Harvey

Radford, VA (04/15/2024) — On April 18, Radford University will once again present the IRS Citizen Academy Training Program, a sprawling, interactive workshop that provides students with training, education and hands-on experience in the investigation of financial crimes.

Approximately 45 students from Radford University, as well as Bridgewater College and Roanoke College, will meet with members of IRS-Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) for this daylong exercise.

Students will be sworn in as "honorary IRS-CI special agents" and, under the supervision of actual special agents, will participate in the steps of a standard IRS investigation. They will interview mock informants, develop background information, analyze tax returns and bank records and navigate the process of obtaining warrants from a magistrate.

The evidence they gather will ultimately lead them to search a targeted location and conduct simulated arrests.

This program was first held on Radford's campus in spring 2023 and is organized by Assistant Professor of Accounting Rob Warren, who was himself an IRS-CI agent for more than 22 years.

The event is also slated to involve the participation of IRS Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) David Meisenheimer, Davis College Interim Dean Angela Stanton, Radford Accounting, Finance, and Information Systems Chair Arthur Carter, Bridgewater College Department Chair Holly Caldwell-Taylor and Roanoke College lecturer Arnica Mulder.

The IRS Citizens Academy Training Program will begin on Thursday, April 18, at 8 a.m. in Kyle Hall 340, with breakout sessions across the day. It is scheduled to run through 3:30 p.m., with a group photo being taken at the end of the exercise.

For more information, contact Assistant Professor of Accounting Rob Warren at 540-831-5250 or rawarren1@radford.edu.
